Interstitial Lung Disease Overview

Interstitial lung disease (ILD) is a chronic condition that causes inflammation and scarring in the lungs. In the United States, ILD affects about 650,000 people, causing approximately 25,000 to 30,000 deaths per year.
Common ILD symptoms can include:
- Chest discomfort
- Dry cough that doesn’t produce mucus
- Extreme fatigue
- Loss of appetite
- Shortness of breath
- Weakness
- Weight loss
Interstitial lung diseases are divided into those with known causes and those that are idiopathic or of an unknown cause. Some known causes include:
- Environmental exposures
- Genetics
- Infections
- Medications, radiation, chemotherapy
- Rare idiopathic conditions
- Smoking
- Systemic and autoimmune diseases
- Work exposures and hazardous particles

We develop treatment plans based on each patient’s diagnosis and severity. Treatments can include medications, oxygen therapy, pulmonary rehabilitation and clinical trials. We discuss diagnostic and treatment planning with a multidisciplinary team trained in advanced lung diseases, pulmonary and critical care medicine, interventional pulmonology, radiology, cardiothoracic surgery, pulmonary hypertension, cardiology, rheumatology, pharmacy and internal medicine.
- What to Expect

Evaluation: A physical exam, imaging of the lungs, lung function tests, oxygen titration studies, laboratory and invasive diagnosis testing as biopsies, if required
Treatment plan: A multispecialty team will create a treatment plan based on the diagnosis, your concerns, and treatment goals
Care: Treatments may help improve symptoms, slow the disease or help maintain quality of life
Close follow-up: By our specialized team of experts
Referral: To other specialties, such as the pulmonary hypertension and rheumatology teams
