AdventHealth Ottawa, formerly Ransom Memorial Health, began operation in the spring of 1931 through a generous gift by Mr. and Mrs. A.L. Cook and matched with money raised by the community. The small, two‐story building was staffed by eleven employees that practiced personalized, family‐oriented medical care. In 1954, funds were raised and a new wing was added to the southeast corner of the facility, opening in 1956. Expansion continued in 1968 when a third floor was added to the southeast wing and again in 1974 when the west wing was built.

For the next 15 years the hospital did not take on any major renovations or expansion projects. In 1990 the south half of the original and first addition wing were torn down and replaced with a new building, opening in December of 1991. The remaining north half was removed in 1992.

A stroll through the main hallway of the new building today, speaks to the legacy of yesterday. Portraits of those dedicated individuals who served this community and retired their practices in Ottawa are available for viewing. Take a moment to visit this celebration of our medical past.

1931
A generous gift from Mr. and Mrs. A.L. Cook and was matched with money raised by the community helped AdventHealth Ottawa open its doors, a small, two story building, with a full staff of 11 employees.

1954
A new wing was added to the south east corner of the original building. This renovation opened in 1956.

1968
Expansion continued when a third floor was added to the southeast wing.

1973
A new building was added to the hospital campus. The building housed patient units, a laboratory, radiology department, and an emergency department.

1989
The original hospital was no longer practical for patient care needs and was demolished.

1990
An outpatient and surgical wing were added to the “new” building built in 1973.

2003
A renovation of the Emergency Department took place adding an additional emergency room and a triage room, as well as changing the entrance and look of the waiting room.

2006
RMH expanded services to Wellsville with the opening of Wellsville Family Medical Clinic

2009
Baldwin Medical Clinic was opened.

2010
Construction began on a new Family Birth Place and four new surgery suites as well as renovations to the in-patient unit and new ICU.

2011
Express Care Clinic was opened.

2012
The Raymond & Marguerite Gibson Medical Arts Building was opened to provide RMH with an additional, modern healthcare facility.

2016
AdventHealth Ottawa Cancer Care (a collaboration between AdventHealth Ottawa and Lawrence Memorial Hospital) was opened to provide local access to quality cancer care.

A beautifully renovated space allowed for the opening of the Surgical Clinic of Ottawa and Women’s Health of Ottawa. A Southeast entrance with parking was established.

2017
Grand opening of the new Emergency Department. The 16,000 square foot addition to the northwest corner of the Emergency Department features 12 treatment rooms with the ability to flex up to 14 exam rooms, which includes two critical care treatment rooms and two trauma rooms.

2019
In May 2019 Ransom Memorial Hospital became AdventHealth Ottawa, joining AdventHealth’s connected system of care comprised of nearly 50 hospital campuses and hundreds of care sites in diverse markets throughout almost a dozen states.

About The AdventHealth Ottawa Foundation

The Ransom Memorial Health Charitable Association has a longstanding tradition of supporting and improving the health and wellness of our community. We are proud to carry our momentum forward into the next phase of our hospital’s future. Through Ransom Memorial Health’s transition to AdventHealth Ottawa, the Ransom Memorial Hospital Charitable Association Board of Directors has decided to do business as The AdventHealth Ottawa Foundation.

The AdventHealth Ottawa Foundation is still an independent 501(c)(3) organization, and 100% of all donations will stay in the Franklin County community. The mission of the Foundation is to inspire philanthropy in our community to support the healing mission of AdventHealth Ottawa.

Funds raised by the foundation will support the purchase of new, updated equipment for Ottawa facilities that provide direct care to members of our community. Programs that will have a life-changing, positive impact on the overall health of the patients we serve can also benefit from your donation.

The mission of the Foundation is to inspire philanthropy in our community to support the healing mission of AdventHealth Ottawa.

Patient and Family Engagement (PFE) is very important to AdventHealth Ottawa. It offers a promising pathway toward higher quality health care, more efficient care and improved overall population health. Engagement meaning consultation, collaboration and partnership between patient and families with staff to improve the care to our patients.

Patient Engagement is a concept that will help to redesign our health care systems. A Patient and Family Advisory Council (PFAC) partners patients and families with members of the healthcare team to provide guidance on how to improve the patient and family experience. Through their unique experiences, they give input on issues that impact care, ensuring that the next patient or family member’s journey is improved.

Five ways that patient and family engagement can directly impact our hospital per the Health Educational Research and Trust organization is:

• Contributes to better clinical outcomes
• Reduces institutional and individual costs of care
• Increases adherence to recommended treatment regiments, which can lead to fewer complications and re-hospitalizations
• Improves patient satisfaction with care coordination
• Enables compliance with patient engagement requirements included in meaningful use and medical home models.

Patient Engagement allows AdventHealth Ottawa to provide care that is respectful of, responsive to patient and family needs, preferences and values. The mission of the AdventHealth Ottawa Patient and Family Advisory Council is aligned with AdventHealth Ottawa's mission, vision and values as below. The PFAC is dedicated to ensuring that our patient and families have a safe, high quality, compassionate and supported health care experience.

Our Patient and Family Advisory Council serves in the role of patient and family advocacy and collaborates with the hospital staff to improve the overall quality of care and the patient experience at AdventHealth Ottawa.
