Joseph Portoghese, MD

Joseph D. Portoghese, MD, FACS was originally board-certified in general surgery in 1992 and specializes in both general surgery and minimally-invasive surgery for an array of medical conditions. During his tenure with Florida Hospital, he served as President of Medical Staff from 2004 to 2006. Following, Dr. Portoghese established the General Surgery Residency Program, which was first accredited in 2006, and served as the Program Director. He is currently the Chief Academic Officer. His passion for ensuring both surgery patients and surgery residents receive the latest in technology, techniques and positive outcomes is evidenced by the standards he put in place, as well as the leadership positions he currently holds. Dr. Portoghese is a graduate of the University of South Florida College of Medicine in Tampa, where he also completed his residency training, as well as surgical oncology research. While in private practice since completion of his training, he has focused on general surgery, with special interest in the areas of thyroid and parathyroid. Dr. Portoghese has been a clerkship faculty for Florida State University College of Medicine since 2002.
