About Our Program
Welcome to our Diagnostic Physics Imaging Residency Program at AdventHealth Orlando. We are delighted that you’re interested in our program.
Our goal is to prepare our residents for independent practice in the field of diagnostic medical physics in a clinical setting and provide instruction that will prepare them for certification by the ABR.
The CAMPEP accredited residency program will admit one resident per year, for two years with an optional third year specialty. It is open to MS or PhD candidates, who are encouraged to apply through the MedPhys Match.
AdventHealth is Florida’s largest health care provider, and the Medical Physics department covers 19 hospitals and their associated outpatient imaging centers in the Central and East Florida divisions. Our offices are in Orlando, Florida, and our group of 14 includes five diagnostic medical physicists, one health physicist, four program managers, three compliance specialists and one administrative assistant.

Program Overview
The Radiation Safety and Medical Physics department at AdventHealth Orlando has been an integral part of the clinical operation of the AdventHealth Central and East Florida divisions for more than 30 years. During this time, the department has grown with the institutions from the 3 original hospitals to more than 19 and their associated imaging centers. The physics group works in collaboration with various clinical departments at all these locations, including radiology, operating rooms, cath labs, pain centers and endoscopy centers to name a few.
The residency program will reside within the Radiation Safety and Medical Physics department and benefit from the experience and clinical relationships that have already been established.
The Diagnostic Medical Physics Residency at AdventHealth Orlando will start in July 2027 with its first resident. The program will receive CAMPEP accreditation in July 2026 for a five-year term through the end of July 2031.

As a resident employed by AdventHealth, you will receive salary and benefits commensurate with the graduate medical education PGY1 and PGY2 salary structure.

The AdventHealth Orlando Diagnostic Medical Physics Residency consists of a two-year program, with an optional third year specialty in radiation safety. The rotations are developed in accordance with the CAMPEP residency program requirements so that our residents are exposed to the various diagnostic imaging modalities under the supervision of board-certified medical physicists. Rotations will consist of general radiography, fluoroscopy, mammography, DEXA, dental equipment, CT, MRI, Nuclear Medicine and PET, US, informatics, radiation safety, shielding calculation, patient exposure calculation and an elective outside rotation opportunity with a private practice group.
The training objectives for the first-year resident are to observe and assist in the various rotation activities so they feel comfortable performing and assisting in the same annual compliance testing and calculations by the second year. Additional didactic training consists of journal club presentations and participation in institutional committees focusing on radiation safety, MRI safety and quality improvement. Clinical research will be available throughout the program, with the opportunity to present internally or at local or national conferences.
The residency program will develop and grow alongside the residents through continuous dialogues between the residents and the residency faculty. From formal evaluations at the end of each rotation, to annual mock orals and the opportunity to participate on the residency steering committee, the residents will have an active role in shaping the program through their feedback and evaluations.
- Application Process

The Diagnostic Medical Physics Residency at AdventHealth Orlando is part of the Medical Physics Residency Application Program (MP-RAP) administered by the AAPM (mprap.aapm.org) and will follow the deadlines listed on the website. Placement of applicants into the program is done via the MedPhys Match.
The AAPM MP-RAP requires the following information when applying: personal information (name, address, contact information), military service history (if applicable), official transcripts (undergraduate and graduate), names of three (3) references (including one from a current advisor or department head), a personal statement indicating why you want to go into medical physics and anything else you want to communicate to the application reviewers (maximum 3,000 characters). Please include a curriculum vitae (CV), including awards, publications and presentations.
Applications will be given careful consideration by the residency faculty. Prospective candidates will be invited for an initial interview, either virtually or over the phone. After the first round of interviews, the top applicants will be offered a second interview consisting of a presentation of their research thesis and an opportunity to meet the entire residency faculty and current residents.

- Clinical Rotations

The clinical rotations vary in duration from one to three months and have been optimized to provide the most exposure to one modality, based on the current annual testing schedule of the medical physics department. The expectation is that 50% of the resident’s time will be spent in the listed rotation, with 10% dedicated to a clinical project, didactic learning or remediation and the remainder of the time, 40%, spent on out-of-rotation testing opportunities.
The residency program is considered a dynamic learning environment and given this baseline schedule, there will be flexibility in customizing the rotations to the individual resident. The rotation schedule will be balanced to account for residents excelling in one clinical modality, while needing more time in others and taking into considerations unique learning opportunities, such as acceptance testing, ACR/DNV/TJC accreditation and inspections, MRI and radioactive materials safety events, and time away for conferences and holidays. The residency is divided into four parts of 6 months duration, each representing an increasing amount of independence for the resident and culminating in the last quarter, when the residents are given electives in the form of focused time on clinical projects or a particular modality and an opportunity to rotate with a consulting group.
