Building Whole Health in East Florida
Our AdventHealth hospitals in East Florida strive to live out our mission of Extending the Healing Ministry of Christ beyond the walls of our facilities.
Our community benefit programs aim to meet the area's needs by caring for our neighbors’ physical, mental, social and spiritual health. We want our presence as health care providers to bring wellness to the greater community through initiatives that help our neighbors feel whole in body, mind and spirit.
We’re committed to growing deep roots into the local communities we call home.
The Power of a Nationwide Network Combined With a Local Focus
-
Community Programs
Our community health programs are driven by our desire to extend whole-person healing outside our buildings. Because caring for our patients’ whole health in body, mind and spirit impacts the communities around them, we desire to shape the areas we serve with care to embrace the whole community.

Community Health Needs Assessments and Plans
Every three years, we conduct community health needs assessments (CHNAs) to determine how we can help improve the lives of people who live near our hospitals. These assessments guide our plans and programming.

Our Local Programs and Initiatives
Every three years, we conduct community health needs assessments (CHNAs) to determine the major needs in our area. This data is then used to develop a Community Health Plan for each hospital to improve residents’ health through education, research, financial assistance, special programs and spiritual resources.
Our East Florida 2023-25 Community Health Plan priorities include behavioral health (addressing substance misuse), early childhood education and community engagement in available resources and services.

- Early Childhood Education Programs
-
Our 2022 CHNA showed that the percentage of youth ready for kindergarten has declined in Volusia and Flagler counties, although it’s still higher than the rest of Florida.
According to public data, only 50.2% of toddlers are enrolled in preschool, which helps prepare them for kindergarten and beyond. We believe in prioritizing early childhood education because of the foundation it provides for better health and long-term outcomes for all residents. We are committed to addressing the needs of the community, especially the most vulnerable populations, to bring wholeness to all we serve.
We partnered with the Early Learning Coalition of Flagler and Volusia Counties to hold educational events on early learning. The program works to enhance children's school readiness by providing opportunities for quality early learning, while strengthening family stability for a healthy community. Research shows that when learning is part of a game, a fun activity or an everyday routine, the information sticks longer.
Through Florida’s Voluntary Prekindergarten (VPK) program, children can learn all developmental domains through play. The eight domains include physical health, approaches to learning, social and emotional development, language and communication, emergent literacy, mathematical and scientific thinking, social studies and the arts, and motor development.
Families also have opportunity to enroll in the 3Ts program, which is comprised of free resources designed to help parents understand how important their role is in their child’s brain development. - Summer Take-Home Bags
-
In the AdventHealth East Florida Division, we distributed more than 4,000 summer take-home bags for VPK students. The bags included storybooks, toys for development, a tracker to help parents view brain development milestones and resource information to help support parents.
They also included information on library locations, screen time guidelines and healthy lifestyle advice. This was a collaborative effort between the Early Learning Coalition, Help Me Grow, Hunger Fight and Lake Cares Inc.
- Support for Kids With Developmental Delays
-
In the AdventHealth East Florida Division, we partnered with Easterseals Florida to offer information sessions on The P.L.A.Y. Project, an autism training and early intervention program. Easterseals Florida offers P.L.A.Y. therapy at their Autism Center of Excellence (ACE), where they help children ages 18 months to 6 years gain language and social skills.
- Safe Sleep
-
AdventHealth Waterman partnered with Healthy Start to provide handouts and virtual education to 614 new parents on safe sleep habits for newborns and connected new parents to Kid Central Inc., a resource for identified parents with unsafe sleep environments to receive a free portable crib and additional safe sleep education.
Our Partnerships Make Us Stronger
We’re thankful to partner with leading organizations to bring care and health closer to home. Our investment in the community includes programs or activities that provide treatment or promote health and healing as a response to identified community needs. These programs increase access to health care and improve overall community health. We work with a range of community partners to help meet these needs.

Community Health Needs Assessments and Plans
Every three years, we conduct a community health needs assessment (CHNA) to learn the needs of our surrounding area. This assessment helps us develop a three-year plan to meet the needs of residents in our community.
