Regular health screenings can help ensure you and your employees stay healthy both on and off the clock. We offer occupational health programs that include skin scope screenings as part of AdventHealth Centra Care’s onsite workplace health services for the well-being of your whole team.

Especially for those who have outdoor jobs, too much exposure to the sun increases the risk of developing skin cancer. We’re here to share more about skin scope screenings, how you can keep your team safe from overexposure and the benefits of early detection of skin damage.

What is a Skin Scope Screening?

A skin scope screening is a type of exam performed by a health care professional, usually a dermatologist, to detect cancer or damage in the skin. During your exam, your doctor will examine your entire body with a dermatoscope tool, looking for unusual moles, growths or abnormalities. This tool uses a combination of lights and magnifying lenses to help your doctor get a clearer look at your skin.

It's important to note that there are three main types of skin cancer — basal cell carcinoma, squamous cell carcinoma and melanoma. While each of these cancers looks different, they can all be identified by changes in the skin, such as new growth or a change in an existing mole. Even if you and your team are feeling healthy, we can help catch potential issues in their earliest stages, before they even cause symptoms.

The Benefits of Skin Scope Screenings

You might assume you would notice any changes in your skin, but it can be nearly impossible to do a thorough check on your own. That’s why skin scope screenings are so important. There are areas of your body that are more difficult to see on your own or take more effort to examine, so maintaining a yearly checkup helps monitor unnoticed changes and encourages preventive health practices and sun-safe behaviors.

Other benefits of skin scope screenings include earlier detection of skin damage, identification of high-risk individuals and extensive education on skin safety. Your employees could be at a higher risk of developing skin cancer or damage without knowing it. Access to this health screening helps them prioritize their health, reduces time away from work and raises team morale. When your employees feel valued and cared for, you help unlock their full potential, and your company begins to thrive.

Sun-Safe Tips

Whether you and your team enjoy the summer sun on the weekend or primarily work outside during the week, we want to help keep you safe. Here are sun-safe choices that the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recommend:

  • Stay in the shade when possible
  • Use sunscreen with an SPF of 15 or higher (The American Academy of Dermatology recommends SPF 30 or higher)
  • Wear a hat with a brim to shade your face, ears and neck
  • Wear clothing that covers your arms and legs
  • Wear sunglasses that wrap around and block UVA and UVB rays

Encouraging your employees to practice these sun-safe behaviors benefits their health and your company as a whole. When your team members are healthy, they’re able to thrive in their roles and their lives. Investing in your team’s well-being is one of the best things you can do.
