As a longtime truck driver, Phillip Anderson spent long hours sitting, ate convenience store meals on the road, smoked heavily and rarely had the opportunity to be active. Over the years, these choices took a toll on his body. Phillip shared with us how he found the encouragement and weight-loss support he needed to achieve lasting weight loss and improved health.

From Struggle to Strength

At his highest, Phillip weighed 400 pounds, and the excess weight was affecting more than just his physical appearance. He didn’t realize it initially, but sleep apnea was also silently affecting his health in a serious way. When he was finally diagnosed, he learned he was having nearly 200 apnea episodes per hour. It became harder to work, harder to stay awake and harder to keep up with daily life. Following his sleep apnea diagnosis, Phillip was also diagnosed with diabetes, obesity, high blood pressure, severe neuropathy and COPD.

“My A1C wouldn’t go under 10.5, and my glucose was between 400 and 600 a day,” Phillip said. Even simple activities became overwhelming. “I couldn’t walk without experiencing pain or losing my breath. I couldn’t even finish a 30‑minute TV show because I would fall asleep.”

Phillip’s Motivation

For Phillip, his desire to lose weight meant more than seeing a lower number on the scale. He tried to make lifestyle changes for years but found it difficult to stay consistent. Other health issues would arise, setbacks would follow and the cycle would become discouraging. “After nearly a decade of this cycle, it wasn’t until the topic of grandchildren came up that I knew I had found my motivation and reason to not stop fighting for my future,” Phillip shared. “I wanted to be present, active and able to enjoy life with my family — especially the new little ones who would soon arrive.”

Achieving Better Health

Guided by his physician and nutritionist at AdventHealth, Phillip followed a personalized plan that addressed not only his physical needs but also his whole-person health. Having our team supporting him at every step gave Phillip the drive to commit fully to his health goals this time around. He quit smoking, followed his pre‑surgery diet and attended pre‑operative nutrition classes to prepare for long‑term lifestyle changes. Phillip’s hard work paid off. These are just a few of his achievements he shared beyond his weight loss:

  • “I went from 24 daily medications down to just 10.”
  • “I haven’t taken a single diabetes medication since the day before surgery. My A1C has stayed at 5.4.”
  • “I can work in my vegetable garden for hours instead of just 10 minutes.”
  • “I no longer depend on mobility or breathing devices.”
  • “I can walk a few miles, sometimes up to 9 miles a day, just doing activities around the house.”

What he regained meant more than anything he lost. “The list of things I can do now feels endless. I’ve regained not just my health but my independence and joy,” he shared.

Life After Surgery: Looking at the Future With Hope

Today, Phillip is living the life he once only imagined. He has the energy to attend family events, stay active at home and enjoy time with his grandsons. He’s also lost nearly half of his body weight, now weighing just 217 pounds.

“Now I’m proud to say I can go to events with the family, and I have my grandsons that I get to spend hours with,” he said. “I’m living proof that it’s never too late to take control of your health and your life.”

To anyone who feels stuck where he once was, Phillip offers a simple message of encouragement: “If you’re struggling right now, know this: change is possible. Find your ‘why,’ hold onto it and take that first step.”
